WYC-SDP: A Legacy of Empowerment

The Worcester Youth Cooperative for Self-Defense & Power (WYC-SDP) was started by Jah’ir and Joel, two WYC members who wanted to use their training to support the confidence and skills of other youth in the community.

In the summers of 2021 and 2022, WYC-SDP offered free self-defense lessons every week sponsored by the Division of Youth’s Recreation Worcester program. These peer-led classes had a transformative impact, instilling discipline, confidence, and a sense of responsibility in participants. While Jah’ir and Joel have moved on to new opportunities, their contributions to this program left an enduring legacy of empowerment within the WYC framework.

Self-defense courses, particularly those led by peers, have a unique ability to change how young people view their own power and potential. The work of WYC-SDP exemplifies the importance of providing youth with opportunities to lead and build skills that benefit their communities.

WYC extends its deepest gratitude to Jah’ir and Joel for their vision and commitment. Their work reminds us of the value of investing in youth leadership and self-determination.
